Kevin Prohl started with an undecorated Atlas RS-11 to create this
model.
The model was detailed with parts from the Atlas locomotive, including
grab irons, lift bars, and MU connections. The horn was turned around
because the GBW operated the locomotive long hood forward. Kevin also
added Kadee #5 couplers to the model.
The model was painted primarily with Floquil
paints: Caboose Red, SP Lettering Gray, Engine Black, and Crystal Cote.
Fellow modeler Norb Novak helped with masking and painting the gray
paint and applying the black pinstripe decals over the radiators.
The handrails were painted with Testors
Pactra Daytona Yellow
lacquer racing finish paint as described in the July 2002
Model Railroader (Workin on the Railroad: Chip-proof
Handrails). This flat paint is designed not to chip on flexible
surfaces. The paint sticks well but is a flat base. However when Crystal
Cote was applied over this paint it began to chip.
Most of the decals for the model were from a DM Custom Decals
diesel hood unit set. The yellow
numbers on the ends were from the Scale Rail Graphics diesel locomotive
set. The small herald on the front of the engine is from an N scale
caboose set from Scale Rail Graphics.
Kevin asks:
"Do you know if this engine had a beacon on the roof?"
If you have an answer, please contact him.
