GBW #306, a chopped-nose RS-3, sits partially dismantled in the summer of 1999.
After the Green Bay Route was merged into the Fox Valley & Western, the Alco diesel units were considered excess and many of them were sold to other railroads. RS-3 #306 (rebuilt with a chopped nose and 2000 HP engine in 1976 and often referred to as an RS-20) #306 wound up with the Caddo, Antoine & Little Missouri Railroad Company in Antoine AK. After the 251 generator set and trucks were removed and sold, the remainder of the locomotive was sold to Ed Bowers with plans to install new trucks and a 244 generator set but he was not able to economically move the locomotive frame. It was dismantled in December 2000. Most parts including the cab and radiator end went to Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, TN for use in their Central of Georgia RS-3 restoration. The short nose, long hood, and other small pieces are stored in Pine Bluff, AR.
This photo was taken while the hood was removed from the unit for removal of the generator. One of the three ex-Green Bay Route C-424's that went to the C.A.L.M. railroad can be seen in the background.
