Green Bay Route diesels that came from other railroads, and those that went

Built as Chicago & North Western #903 in March 1962 (Alco b/n
#83604).
The C&NW returned all four of their RS-27s (#900-903) to Alco in
December 1966. Increased traffic on the GBW led to the railroad leasing
and then soon purchasing this locomotive as their first second-hand diesel
locomotive. For a brief time it kept the C&NW paint scheme but with a
Green Bay Route herald on the sides of the cab, as shown in the photo at
right.

Built as Pennsylvania Railroad #2415 in 1963 (Alco b/n #84558).
This was the first production C-424 built (using some parts from from
Alco RS-27 demonstrator #640-1), and was the only C-424 on the PRR. After
the PRR bankruptcy it was Penn Central #2415 and Conrail #2474. The
following history is the same as GBW #319-321: The unit was rebuilt by
GE-Hornell and sold to the GBW in 1980.

After the LHR bankruptcy it was Conrail #2075. It was rebuilt by
GE-Hornell and sold to the GBW in 1980. At a later date the prime mover
was replaced at Norwood Shops by one from a Burlington Northern
locomotive, probably BN RS-11 #4181 (ex Northern Pacific).

Purchased new in January 1949, the Alco S-1 was sold to Nekoosa-Edwards
Paper Company (#12), Nekoosa, Wis. in June 1968. The unit was resold to
Cargill Corporation (#12), Buffalo, IA in 1980. It is rumored that Cargill
#12 is for sale and that the Colfax Railroad Museum was hoping to acquire
it.

(Alco b/n #69403).
Sold to Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co. (#61) in March 1968. It was
transferred to Nekoosa-Edwards mill in Ashdown, Ark in February, 1970.
Current status: Stored unservicable in Ashdown, and had become
the property of a dealer who had it for sale. |

The Alco S-2 was sold to Wisconsin Electric Power Company in June 1968.
The unit operated as a remote control robot.

Approximately 1970, it was leased to Fort Howard Paper Co. (Green Bay,
Wis.) short-term, renumbered and had 'FtHPCo' on the long hood sides.
Later that decade it was sold to Railroad Rebuilders along with GBW #303,
who sold it to Ann Arbor (#301) in 1979.

Diesels in railroad museums:

Built as Green Bay & Western #301 in February 1950 (Alco b/n
#77914).
Engines #301-#304 were built new for the Green Bay Route in 1950. In
the 1970s the GBW sold or scrapped their fleet of RS-2's because of
dwindling supplies for the aging 244 Alco engines. GBW #301 was sold to
Railroad Rebuilders of Navajo AZ in October 1977, who upgraded the loco
and sold it to the Michigan Interstate Railway, which took over operations
of the Ann Arbor Railroad that month. In 2000 the locomotive was
vandalized and the cab set on fire. After a stay on the Adrian &
Blissfield (in GOLD lettering -- presumably Golden Age Railway Museum) in
Blissfield, Mich., the locomotive was moved to the Lake Superior Railroad
Museum, Duluth, Minn. in October 2004 after purchase by the Duluth South
Shore & Atlantic Division of the Soo Line Historical & Technical
Society.
Current status: Owned by the Duluth South Shore & Atlantic
Division of the SLHTS at the LSRM.

#77916).
Alco RS-2 #303 followed a similar history to #301. It was sold in
January 1978 to Railroad Rebuilders, and thence to Michigan Interstate
Railway. After a stay on the Adrian & Blissfield in Blissfield, Mich.,
the locomotive was moved to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, Duluth,
Minn. in October 2004 after purchase by the Duluth South Shore &
Atlantic Division of the Soo Line Historical & Technical Society.
Current status: Owned by the Duluth South Shore & Atlantic
Division of the SLHTS at the LSRM.

Built as Green Bay & Western #305 in May 1951 (Alco b/n
#78856).
Another of the chop-nosed RS-20's, #305 is owned by the Gopher State
Railroad Museum in New Prague, MN. The actual museum is not yet open and
#305 is leased out. The locomotive was leased to the Little Rock &
Western Railway for several years, arriving there on June 6, 1980, and was
at Badger Mining in Taylor WI by August 1994.
Current status: On lease as a backup unit while the GSRM
prepares to open to the public. Owned by Gopher

After the WC purchase in it was sold to Indiana Hi-Rail Corp. by March
1994 and then to Martin Marietta Corp. (312), Junction City, Ga. In August
2005 it was purchased by Vintage Locomotives, Inc. (Ed Bowers);
to be moved to the Southern Appalachia
Railway Museum in Knoxville, Tenn.

#3498-01).
Purchased in 1968, it was the last new locomotive acquired by the Green
Bay Route,. A premature bearing failure caused the Alco C-430 to be
donated to Green Bay's National Railroad Museum in 1987.
Current status: On display at National Railroad Museum. Owned by
National Railroad Museum.,

Ex-Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe #9841,#841, Lake Superior &
Ishpeming #2402, was purchased in November 1989. The Alco RS-15 was
donated to the Illinois Railway Museum in 1996. An interesting anecdote:
while en route to the IRM, this engine wound up getting on a westbound
Union Pacific manifest freight out of Chicago and was discovered in
Nebraska!
