A major failure required a complete rebuild of the Alco C-430 #315 in GBW's
Norwood Yard shops.
The shop crews were never fond of #315 -- it was the only engine on the
railroad with an AC-DC transmission system. Stocking all the parts
required for the #315 was a problem. All of the other engines on the
roster in the 1970s were mechanically similar, right down to the rebuilt RS-20's.
Oddball engines, even on small roads (and perhaps, more so on small roads) quickly become the problem
child and it never fails that the shop crews don't like working on them, so they become
"hanger queens" and of course then the bean counters start to notice that their availability ratio is low
and the cost of repair parts stick out -- so off they go Related links:
