A dirty Alco C-424 works industries at Plover.
It's a few days after the Thanksgiving holiday, and Alco C-424 #322
works the industries at Plover. Check out the soot on the cab side
-- it's hard to believe that it is actually painted red!
The Green Bay & Western of the 1960s and 70s would never had
allowed an engine to get so dirty; but this was a different era.
The Staggers Rail Act
deregulated railroads in 1980 and the loss of car ferry connections
removed overhead traffic, putting great pressure on the railroad to keep
operating costs down. Clean locomotives were a casualty of the new
economic reality.
Despite these efforts, the end of the GB&W was not far away...
nine months after this photo was taken the Wisconsin Central
completed the purchase of the railroad and merged its operations with
the Fox River Valley Railroad.
A big "thank you" goes out to Andrew
Nelson for sharing this and other photos on this web site!
