Holy cow! It looks like the whole village of Manawa showed up at the Green
Bay & Western tracks to have their picture taken at the derailment.
This postcard from the turn of the last century shows a Cincinnati, Hamilton
& Dayton Railway gondola collecting the remains of the wreckage. Wheel sets
of the wrecked cars are still sitting on the roadbed next to the gondola.
I love the details in this photo!
I count twenty-two people on the gondola, including the person hanging from
the steps on the right side and the kid sitting on the corner of the car. There
is a piles of some sort of spilled refuse still sitting on the near track. Check
out the two girls standing very meekly next to the caboose on the left side.
There sure are a lot of children in the photo perhaps the derailment
happened near a school? An assortment of tools is in the picture, including
some shovels on the ground and a few poles propped up against the CH&D car.
The one detail that is missing from this photo, however, is the car on the
left side of the postcard. It looks like it may be one of the GB&Ws
pre-1920s era cabooses.
