Deb Fifield had a unique vantage point when she captured
this image of an eastbound train
led by locomotives #314 and #315. The near locomotive is GBW #315,
the only Alco C-430 on the railroad, and still in the red-and-gray paint scheme
of the 1950s & 60s. Ahead of it is #314,
an Alco C-424 with a new all-red paint job. The four-span drawbridge
across the Mississippi River opened in 1891.
By the 1970s it was used jointly by CB&Q,
C&NW, CMStP&P,
and GB&W at a restricted speed of 6 miles per hour. It was in use for over
100 years until it was closed in 1985 due to heavy repairs needed on the trestle
approach and an inability for the main span to handle freight cars in excess of
263,000 pounds.
