GB&W #251 leads a short freight train across the swing bridge
over Sturgeon Bay.
GB&W #251 was a 2-6-0 Mogul built by Alco in 1914. This
undated photo shows the locomotive leading a freight northbound on the moveable
bridge over the waters of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The bridge
was built in 1887 for horse teams and foot traffic, and strengthened and
improved for railroad traffic a few years later when the Ahnapee &
Western RR was built to Sturgeon Bay. For many years the
bridge carried both rail and highway traffic on its narrow width.
This undated photo is from the Door County Historical Museum. This one of only a handful of color
photos of Green Bay Route steam power that I have ever seen. |
