A pair of RS-3s lead an eastbound train over the temporary culvert
over the East Fork of Halls Creek.
After the 1968 bridge collapse
at Merrillan, the GBW crews quickly replaced the crossing of the East Fork of Halls Creek with this this temporary culvert
arrangement. Here we see RS-3's #305 and #307 work their way
gingerly through the shoofly trackage. The river crossing was
eventually replaced by a single large culvert
to handle the annual springtime runoff.
The two people down at the bottom of the embankment helps give you an
idea of how large this fill was. On the left side of the
photo you can see the a hopper laying on its side and a freight car
truck, victims of the derailment that occurred when the bridge
collapsed.
