GBW's "Job C" passes eastbound through Alma Center in early
1987.
Cross-state trains Nos. 1 & 2 -- a staple of the Green Bay Route going back
to the 1800s -- were annulled in December 1986 in an effort to reduce operating
costs.
Instead of a single cross-state train on the timetable, traffic was moved
over the railroad by a series out out-and-back turns: Job A operated
daily between Green Bay and Manawa, where cars were swapped with Job B
which operated daily between Wisconsin Rapids and Manawa. The west end of the
railroad was handed by Job C which operated between Wisconsin Rapids and
East Winona on an out one day, back the next basis.
Andrew
Nelson captured Job C passing through Alma Center as it returned to
Wisconsin Rapids in January, 1987. GBW management eventually won concessions to
limit the size of train crews and Train Nos. 1 and 2 were reestablished in
mid-1987.
